How many days do I need for the Ha Giang Loop?
You need minimum 3 days for the Ha Giang Loop, but this rushes the experience — 6+ hours of riding per day with minimal stops. Four days is the sweet spot: manageable daily distances (3–5 hours riding), time for detours to Lung Cu flag tower, and evenings to explore towns. Five to six days is ideal for travelers who want to add Hoang Su Phi rice terraces or spend two nights in Dong Van.
The Ha Giang Loop can be done in 3 to 6 days depending on your riding experience, tolerance for long days in the saddle, and interest in side trips. The key is matching your itinerary to your priorities: are you collecting mountain passes, or do you want time to explore villages and markets?
3 days: Minimum possible (not recommended)
Total distance: ~350km Daily riding: 6–8 hours Best for: Experienced riders on a tight schedule
| Day | Route | Distance | Riding Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ha Giang → Quan Ba → Yen Minh | 100km | 5–6 hours |
| 2 | Yen Minh → Dong Van → Meo Vac | 70km | 4–5 hours |
| 3 | Meo Vac → Ha Giang city | 140km | 6–7 hours |
This is the absolute minimum. You’ll spend most of each day on the motorbike, arriving at each town too tired to explore. Ma Pi Leng Pass gets rushed. There’s no time for Lung Cu flag tower, no homestay visits, no market wandering. If it rains, you’re behind schedule with no buffer.
Only choose 3 days if you’re an experienced rider confident in long-distance mountain riding, or if you’re on a very tight schedule. Even then, expect to finish exhausted.
4 days: Sweet spot (recommended)
Total distance: ~350km Daily riding: 3–6 hours Best for: Most travelers, first-time Loop riders
| Day | Route | Distance | Riding Time | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ha Giang → Quan Ba → Yen Minh | 100km | 4–5 hours | Heaven’s Gate, Twin Mountains, Tam Son town |
| 2 | Yen Minh → Dong Van | 50km | 2–3 hours | King’s Palace, Dong Van old quarter, Sunday market |
| 3 | Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Meo Vac | 35km | 2 hours | Ma Pi Leng viewpoint, Nho Que River boat |
| 4 | Meo Vac → Ha Giang city | 140km | 5–6 hours | Gam River valley, return journey |
This is the most common itinerary and the one we recommend. Daily distances are manageable, leaving afternoons free for exploration. You can:
- Spend a morning at Dong Van market without watching the clock
- Take the boat trip on Nho Que River through Tu San Gorge
- Stop at viewpoints without worrying about daylight
- Arrive at each destination with energy to walk around
Accommodation is easy to find in Yen Minh, Dong Van, and Meo Vac — all have multiple guesthouses and homestays in the 150,000–300,000 VND range.
5 days: Relaxed pace (ideal)
Total distance: ~380km (with Lung Cu detour) Daily riding: 2–5 hours Best for: Travelers who want depth over distance
| Day | Route | Distance | Riding Time | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ha Giang → Quan Ba → Yen Minh | 100km | 4–5 hours | Heaven’s Gate, pine hill sunset |
| 2 | Yen Minh → Dong Van | 50km | 2–3 hours | King’s Palace, arrive early for market setup |
| 3 | Dong Van (rest day) | 0km | 0 | Lung Cu flag tower day trip (60km round trip) |
| 4 | Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Meo Vac | 35km | 2 hours | Ma Pi Leng, Nho Que River boat |
| 5 | Meo Vac → Ha Giang city | 140km | 5–6 hours | Return journey |
Adding a rest day in Dong Van transforms the trip. You can take a day trip to Lung Cu flag tower (Vietnam’s northernmost point) without packing and unpacking. The flag tower climb offers 360° views into China. Dong Van’s Sunday market is worth a full morning — arrive at 7am to watch vendors set up, stay for the livestock trading, leave before the tourist buses arrive at 10am.
This pace also allows for homestay experiences: spend one night in a H’Mong or Dao village outside Dong Van instead of in town itself.
6 days: Hoang Su Phi extension (for rice terrace enthusiasts)
Total distance: ~450km (with Hoang Su Phi detour) Daily riding: 3–6 hours Best for: Photographers, rice terrace enthusiasts, repeat visitors
| Day | Route | Distance | Riding Time | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ha Giang → Bac Me → Hoang Su Phi | 80km | 4–5 hours | Rice terraces (Sep–Oct only) |
| 2 | Hoang Su Phi → Yen Minh | 70km | 4–5 hours | Mountain roads, village stops |
| 3 | Yen Minh → Dong Van | 50km | 2–3 hours | King’s Palace, Dong Van |
| 4 | Dong Van → Lung Cu → Dong Van | 60km | 3 hours | Flag tower day trip |
| 5 | Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Meo Vac | 35km | 2 hours | Ma Pi Leng, Nho Que River |
| 6 | Meo Vac → Ha Giang city | 140km | 5–6 hours | Return journey |
Hoang Su Phi is a detour west of the main Loop, accessible from Bac Me. The rice terraces here are among Vietnam’s most beautiful — carved into slopes at 1,000–1,400 meters elevation. Visit in late September to early October for golden rice; other times it’s just green fields.
The road to Hoang Su Phi is rougher than the main Loop — expect potholes and occasional mud. But the views are worth it for photographers and travelers seeking less-visited areas.
