How do I see Tu San Canyon from the Ha Giang Loop?
Tu San Gorge is Southeast Asia's deepest canyon at ~700m deep, with turquoise Nho Que River. Two ways to experience: (1) View from Ma Pi Leng Pass viewpoint — free, buy a drink at Panorama café. (2) Kayak/boat tour from Meo Vac — 150,000–250,000 VND for 2–3 hour trip. Kayak shows canyon walls from below; viewpoint shows full scale from above.
Tu San Gorge (Hẻm Tu Sản) is Southeast Asia’s deepest canyon — approximately 700 meters from rim to river. The Nho Que River flows through the bottom in a striking S-curve, its turquoise waters contrasting with the gray limestone walls. The gorge is visible from the Ma Pi Leng Pass viewpoint, but you can also descend into it for a boat tour.
Viewing from above: Ma Pi Leng viewpoint
The easiest way to see Tu San is from the main viewpoint at Ma Pi Leng Pass summit. This is free — just park your motorbike and walk to the edge. There’s a small café (Panorama) where you can buy coffee or tea (30,000–50,000 VND), but you’re not required to purchase to access the viewpoint.
Best time for photos: Early morning (7–9am) or late afternoon (3–5pm). The sun angle creates shadows that emphasize the depth. Midday light flattens the scene.
What you’ll see: The entire S-curve of the Nho Que River, 700 meters below. On clear days, you can trace the river’s path through the gorge for several kilometers. On foggy days (common December–February), visibility may drop to near zero — wait for the fog to lift.
How long to stay: 15–30 minutes is enough for photos and soaking in the view. Some travelers bring a picnic and stay longer.
Boat tour from Meo Vac
The second way to experience Tu San is from below — a kayak or boat tour that takes you through the gorge itself. The tour departs from the Nho Que River pier, about 15 minutes by motorbike from Meo Vac town.
Tour details:
- Duration: 2–3 hours round trip
- Cost: 150,000–250,000 VND per person (kayak); 300,000–400,000 VND (motorized boat)
- Schedule: Daily departures from 7am to 4pm, weather permitting
- Group size: Usually 4–8 people per boat
- Includes: Life jacket, guide, and sometimes bottled water
The route: The boat travels upriver from the pier, entering the narrowest section of the gorge. The limestone walls rise vertically on both sides, creating a corridor barely 50 meters wide in places. The water is strikingly turquoise — colored by minerals from the limestone.
Kayak vs. motorized boat: Kayaks are quieter and let you paddle at your own pace, but require some upper body strength. Motorized boats are faster and require no effort, but are louder and less intimate. Both follow the same route.
What to bring:
- Sunscreen and hat (the gorge offers no shade)
- Waterproof bag for camera/phone
- Water bottle (not always included)
- Change of clothes (you may get splashed)
When to visit
Dry season (October–April): The river is calm, water is clear and turquoise, and boat tours run daily. This is the best time for both the viewpoint and boat tour.
Wet season (May–September): The river swells and currents strengthen. Boat tours may be cancelled after heavy rain. The viewpoint remains accessible, but fog and rain can obscure visibility.
Best months: October and November combine calm water, clear skies, and comfortable temperatures. December and January can be foggy; March and April may have lingering mist.
Getting to the pier
The Nho Que River pier is located about 5km from Meo Vac town. From Meo Vac center:
- By motorbike: 15 minutes via DT176. Follow signs for “Sông Nho Quế” or “Du thuyền Sông Nho Quế.”
- By taxi: 50,000–80,000 VND from Meo Vac center.
- By boat tour shuttle: Some operators offer free pickup from Meo Vac hotels — ask when booking.
Parking at the pier is free for motorbikes. There’s a small ticket office and waiting area with toilets (5,000 VND fee).
