How many days should I spend on Cat Ba Island?
Spend 2-3 days on Cat Ba Island: one day for Cat Ba town and nearby beaches (Cat Co 1, 2, 3), one day for Cat Ba National Park hiking, and one day for Lan Ha Bay kayaking or a cruise. Minimum 2 days if you're rushing; 3-4 days for a relaxed pace. One day is insufficient — you'll miss the national park or Lan Ha Bay.
Cat Ba Island is larger than most visitors expect. At 285 km², it’s the largest island in the Gulf of Tonkin — bigger than Singapore. The town is compact, but the island’s real draws (national park, remote beaches, Lan Ha Bay) require time.
Minimum stay: 2 days
Two days is the bare minimum if you’re combining Cat Ba with a Hai Phong stopover or heading back to Hanoi quickly.
- Day 1: Arrive from Hai Phong (ferry + transfer: 2 hours), check in, Cat Co 1/2/3 beaches, sunset at Cannon Fort.
- Day 2: Morning Lan Ha Bay tour (kayaking, swimming), afternoon departure.
You’ll see the highlights but miss the national park and Hospital Cave.
Ideal stay: 3 days
Three days allows for a complete experience without rushing.
- Day 1: Arrive, beaches, Cannon Fort sunset, evening in town.
- Day 2: Cat Ba National Park hiking (3-4 hours), Hospital Cave (30-minute tour), dinner in town.
- Day 3: Lan Ha Bay full-day tour (kayaking, floating village, swimming), late afternoon departure.
This pace lets you experience the island’s diversity: beaches, jungle, history, and bay.
Extended stay: 4-5 days
Four to five days is for travelers who want to explore deeply or use Cat Ba as a base for multiple Lan Ha Bay trips.
- Day 1-3: As above.
- Day 4: Viet Hai fishing village trek (full day, requires guide), or rock climbing.
- Day 5: Relaxation day — revisit favorite beaches, explore hidden coves, or book a second Lan Ha Bay cruise to different anchorages.
Seasonal considerations
- High season (May-August): Book accommodation in advance. Beaches are crowded on weekends. Lan Ha Bay tours run daily.
- Low season (October-April): Fewer crowds, lower prices. Some tours reduce frequency. Fog may affect ferry schedules in December-February.
- Storm season (July-September): Check weather forecasts. Tours may be cancelled during typhoons.
Where to stay
- Cat Ba town: Most convenient for restaurants, tour booking, and ferry access. 80% of visitors stay here.
- Cat Co beaches: Quieter, closer to swimming. Limited dining options.
- Viet Hai village: Remote, eco-lodges only. Accessible by boat or 4-hour trek. For multi-day stays.
The short version
Minimum: 2 days — beaches + Lan Ha Bay. Ideal: 3 days — beaches, national park, Hospital Cave, Lan Ha Bay. Extended: 4-5 days — Viet Hai trek, rock climbing, multiple bay tours. Avoid: One-day trips — you’ll miss the island’s best features.
