What is the cheapest area to stay in Hanoi?
The cheapest areas are the northern edge of the Old Quarter (near Đồng Xuân market) and Ba Đình district. Dorm beds: 150,000–250,000 VND. Budget guesthouses: 300,000–500,000 VND per night. Tây Hồ is quieter but 20–30% more expensive for equivalent rooms.
Hanoi has a functioning budget accommodation market — decades of backpacker traffic have ensured it. The price varies more by location within the city than by the type of room you’re booking.

Northern Old Quarter vs southern Old Quarter
The Old Quarter’s cheapest zone is its northern section — the streets around Hàng Chiếu, Hàng Giấy, and the blocks adjacent to Đồng Xuân market. These streets are less photographed and less tourist-optimized than the southern Hoàn Kiếm-adjacent blocks, and prices reflect that.
You’re still inside the Old Quarter — 15–20 minutes walk from Hoàn Kiếm Lake — but 30–40% cheaper than the same category of room on Mã Mây or Hàng Bè. The tradeoff: slightly less polished streets, and some alleys that require more navigation for Grab pickups.
Ba Đình — the underrated cheap option
Ba Đình district sits west of the Old Quarter, adjacent to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Temple of Literature. It’s a residential-governmental zone, not a tourist district, which keeps prices down. Budget guesthouses here run 280,000–450,000 VND per night — among the cheapest full rooms available within reasonable distance of central Hanoi.
Getting to the Old Quarter from Ba Đình: 10–15 minutes by Grab (35,000–50,000 VND). Adequate for a short stay; adds up over a week.
The Tây Hồ premium
West Lake commands higher prices despite being further from the main sights. The neighborhood is quieter, has better cafés, and attracts expats and longer-stay visitors — which has pushed accommodation prices up. Budget options exist but are harder to find, and the overall price floor is higher. Worth the premium for a longer stay or if you value morning calm over convenience.
