Is there a train from Hanoi to Sapa?
No direct train to Sapa. The night train from Hanoi station (Ga Hà Nội) runs to Lào Cai (8–9 hours overnight), then a 1-hour bus or minivan to Sapa town. Soft sleeper tickets: 300,000–650,000 VND depending on train and class. Trains depart Hanoi around 9–10pm; arrive Lào Cai at 5:30–6:30am.
Sapa sits at 1,500m elevation in the Hoàng Liên Sơn range, and there is no railway line into the mountains. The train goes as far as Lào Cai in the valley below; from there, road transport covers the final 38km climb to Sapa town.
The journey in stages
Stage 1: Hanoi → Lào Cai by train
Hanoi’s main station (Ga Hà Nội, 120 Lê Duẩn, Hoàn Kiếm) operates the Lào Cai overnight trains. Current main operators serving this route:
- SP1: Departs Hanoi ~21:35, arrives Lào Cai ~06:00. Operated by Vietnam Railways.
- SP3: Departs Hanoi ~22:00, arrives Lào Cai ~06:10
- Livitrans Express, Victoria Express: private operators with more comfortable carriages, depart around 21:00–22:00
Ticket classes and 2026 prices:
| Class | Vietnam Railways | Private operators |
|---|---|---|
| Hard seat | 160,000–200,000 VND | Not available |
| Soft seat | 220,000–280,000 VND | Not available |
| Hard sleeper (6-berth) | 280,000–350,000 VND | Not available |
| Soft sleeper (4-berth) | 350,000–520,000 VND | 600,000–900,000 VND |
| Private cabin (2-berth) | 550,000–700,000 VND | 800,000–1,200,000 VND |
Private operators (Livitrans, Victoria) offer newer rolling stock, onboard service, and English-speaking staff. They cost more but deliver a meaningfully better experience — worth the premium for a first visit.
Stage 2: Lào Cai → Sapa by road
Minivans from outside Lào Cai station to Sapa: 50,000–80,000 VND per person. Depart when full (usually 10–20 minutes after the train arrives). The road from Lào Cai to Sapa is winding and scenic — no major delays unless road construction is active.
Overnight bus alternative
Sleeper buses from Hanoi (departing from Giáp Bát or Mỹ Đình bus stations) go directly to Sapa town in 5–6 hours. Cost: 200,000–300,000 VND. The trade-off: the mountain section of the road involves tight switchbacks, which some travelers find difficult. Buses depart around 10pm and arrive Sapa around 4–5am — earlier than the train, which means waiting for daylight if accommodation doesn’t open early.
