What should I pack for Hanoi in October?
October is Hanoi's best month — 21–28°C, low humidity, minimal rain. Pack light layers (t-shirt + light overshirt for evenings), comfortable walking shoes (you'll walk a lot), and one light jacket or cardigan for cool evenings (18–20°C after dark). An umbrella for occasional showers. No winter gear, no beach gear.
October is the answer to “when should I visit Hanoi.” The weather is at its best — the summer rain has stopped, the winter cold hasn’t arrived, and the humidity drops to comfortable levels. Your packing list is accordingly straightforward.
The list
Clothing
- 4–5 t-shirts or short-sleeve shirts (cotton breathes better than synthetic)
- 1–2 long-sleeve shirts or light overshirts (for evenings and temple visits)
- 1 light jacket, cardigan, or packable windbreaker (evenings drop to 18–20°C)
- 2 pairs of long trousers or jeans (shorts are fine for daytime but less common at dinner)
- Underwear and socks for 5+ days (laundry service is 30,000–50,000 VND/kg at most hotels)
- Swim trunks/suit if your hotel has a pool
Footwear
- 1 pair of comfortable walking shoes or sneakers (the most important item — you’ll walk 10,000+ steps/day)
- 1 pair of slip-on shoes or sandals (for temple visits and quick errands)
Accessories
- Compact umbrella (not daily, but you’ll use it 2–3 times)
- Sunglasses (the sky is clearer in October than any other month)
- Small day bag or crossbody (pickpocket risk is low but a zipped bag is standard practice)
- Reusable water bottle (fill from hotel, buy 5L jugs at Circle K)
Electronics
- Phone and charger (you’ll use it for Grab, maps, translation)
- Universal power adapter (Vietnam uses Type A, C, and F — same as US/EU mostly)
- Portable power bank (long days out drain the battery faster)
What not to pack
No winter gear. No heavy rain jacket. No beachwear (Hanoi is not a beach city — that’s what Nha Trang is for). No formal clothing — even upscale restaurants in Hanoi are casual. Leave the hiking boots unless you’re heading to Sapa afterwards.
The one thing to overpack: comfortable shoes. Everything else is available in Hanoi at lower prices than you’d pay at home.
