Is it worth renting a bicycle in Hoi An?
Yes, a bicycle is worth renting for almost any stay in Hoi An. It costs 30,000–50,000 VND/day from most hotels and gives you direct access to An Bang Beach (4km, 15 min), the tailor shops on Nguyen Duy Hieu, and the outlying cafes. Electric bikes (80,000–120,000 VND/day) make sense if you're doing longer rides or it's hot.
What you can do with a bicycle
A bicycle covers the three main reasons to leave the old town on foot:
An Bang Beach — 4km east, 15 minutes by bike. The road is mostly flat with light traffic after the first kilometer. Lock your bike at the beach cafes (staff usually watch them). Lockable bike racks are rare.
Tailor shops — Many of the better tailors are clustered 500m–1.5km from the old town core along Nguyen Duy Hieu and Le Loi streets. Cycling between fittings is faster than walking and avoids the heat.
Cafes and restaurants — The popular ones locals actually use are scattered 1–3km from the tourist center. A bike makes the difference between discovering them and defaulting to the overpriced spots on the main square.
What to expect
Prices are low enough that you won’t overthink it:
| Source | Bicycle | Electric bike |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel (most) | 20,000–50,000 VND/day | 80,000–120,000 VND/day |
| Rental shop | 50,000–100,000 VND/day | 100,000–150,000 VND/day |
Bikes are usually single-speed with basic brakes — fine for Hoi An’s flat terrain. Check the brakes before you ride away; most hotels won’t complain if you ask to swap a bad one.
Locks and theft
Bike theft happens. Use the lock provided (almost all rentals include one) and lock to a fixed object when leaving the bike unattended. In the old town, short stops at restaurants or shops are usually fine without locking.
Don’t leave the bike overnight in an unlit alley.
Rainy season caveat
In October and November, Hoi An floods regularly — sometimes knee-deep in the old town streets. Cycling is impractical and the bikes can be damaged by submersion. If you’re visiting during flood season, check morning conditions before renting.
