What is Bai Mon beach at the foot of Mui Dien?
Bai Mon is a secluded beach below Mui Dien lighthouse, 25–30km south of Tuy Hoa. Access: 300 steps from the lighthouse road — 10–15 minutes down. No vendors, no umbrellas for rent, no lifeguard. Water is clear and swimmable January to August. Bring your own water and food.
Bai Mon has what most beaches in Vietnam have lost: the sense that you found it yourself. There’s no road to the shoreline. The only way down is the path from the lighthouse parking area — roughly 300 steps cut into the rock face of Mui Dien headland, descending to a narrow crescent of white sand backed by stone cliffs.
At the bottom, there’s nothing for sale. No chairs, no cold drinks, no vendors. If you forgot water, you walk back up.
Access
The beach is part of the Mui Dien cape complex, approximately 25–30 kilometers south of Tuy Hoa. After riding to the lighthouse parking area, follow the signed path to the left of the lighthouse building. The descent takes 10 to 15 minutes on the stepped path; there’s also a rougher trail for those who prefer natural footing. Coming up takes a few minutes longer.
The path is not illuminated. If you’re visiting at dawn for sunrise at Mui Dien, bring a headlamp for the descent to the beach afterward.
The beach
Bai Mon is compact — a few hundred meters of curved shoreline, narrowing at both ends where the cliffs meet the water. The sand is fine and pale. The water runs clear over rocks and sand, deeper blue further out.
In calm conditions (January through August), the swimming is straightforward. The bay is partially sheltered by the headland, which cuts the swell and makes the surface gentler than exposed beaches. The sea floor drops gradually — reasonable for swimmers of average ability, not for young children without supervision.
From September through November, south winds push waves into this bay. The water isn’t necessarily violent, but it’s unpredictable and no one is watching. Come back in the dry season.
What to bring
Water: Nothing is sold at the beach. The round trip from parking area to beach and back is 30 to 40 minutes of walking; the beach itself can easily consume two hours. Bring more water than you think you need.
Food: Same situation — pack it in, pack it out. The nearest food options are back in Hoa Hiep town on Highway 1A, roughly 5 minutes north by motorbike.
Sunscreen and shade: The beach has no natural shade except at the cliff base. The sun off white sand at midday is intense.
Reef shoes: Useful for wading near the rock edges where the sand gives way to stone and coral.
Combining with Mui Dien sunrise
The most common visit sequence is: ride to Mui Dien at 4:45am → walk up to the lighthouse for sunrise → descend to Bai Mon for a swim while the beach is empty → leave by 9am before the road gets busy.
This gives you the best of both — the dramatic light of sunrise from the headland, then the beach to yourself in the cooler morning hours.
