Can I visit both Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta in one day from Saigon?

Published · 4 min read
Quick Answer

Possible with a private car and an early start, but the result is two rushed half-experiences. Cu Chi Tunnels (70km northwest) and the Mỹ Tho Mekong Delta (70km south) are in opposite directions from Saigon — doing both means 300km+ of driving in one day. Most travelers who try this report wishing they'd done them on separate days.

The two most popular day trips from Saigon are in opposite directions: Cu Chi Tunnels is 70km northwest, and the Mekong Delta entry point (Mỹ Tho) is 70km south. Doing both in one day means a lot of driving, rushed site visits, and a tired evening.

The logistics problem

Saigon sits between the two destinations. A realistic combined route is:

  • Saigon → Cu Chi: 70km, 90 minutes in light traffic, up to 2+ hours during morning rush
  • Cu Chi → Mỹ Tho (Mekong): ~120km, roughly 2.5–3 hours without significant traffic
  • Mỹ Tho → Saigon: 70km, 1.5–2 hours

Total driving: approximately 6–7 hours on the road. Add 3 hours at Cu Chi and 3 hours on the Mekong and you have a 12–13 hour day.

It’s doable with a private car and a 6am start. It’s not a comfortable experience.

What gets compressed

Cu Chi: The film (30 min), the surface exhibits (45 min), the tunnel crawl (20 min), and the context from a good guide — properly absorbed, this takes 3–4 hours. In a combined day, you’d spend 2–2.5 hours maximum before driving south.

Mekong: The boat section is the experience. At Mỹ Tho, that’s 45–90 minutes on the canal. Add transport to the dock, the coconut candy stop, and lunch, and 3 hours is the minimum. Arriving at 1:30pm means being there in the hottest part of the day, with reduced boat activity.

Both experiences suffer from compression. Neither is best experienced in a rush.

The better approach

Two separate days: Cu Chi on day 1, Mekong on day 2. Both are half-day trips — you’re back in Saigon by 1–2pm each day and have afternoons free. This is the practical choice for travelers with 4+ days in the city.

One destination per trip: If you only have one day for excursions, choose the one that matches your interest more specifically. Cu Chi for history and military context; Mekong Delta for landscapes, boats, and delta life. How much would a private car cost to do Cu Chi and Mekong Delta in one day?
A private car for a combined Cu Chi + Mekong Delta day runs 2,500,000–3,500,000 VND for the vehicle (4–5 seats), not including guide fees or entry charges. The driver typically starts at 6am and finishes by 7–8pm. This is the only realistic way to do both in one day — group tours don't offer combined itineraries because the logistics don't work efficiently.
What's the realistic schedule for a combined Cu Chi + Mekong day?
6:00am depart Saigon. 7:30am arrive Ben Dinh (Cu Chi). 7:30–11:00am tunnels visit. 11:30am depart Cu Chi. 1:30pm arrive Mỹ Tho (Mekong). 1:30–4:30pm boat, canal, delta visit. 5:00pm depart Mekong. 7:00pm return Saigon. This schedule allows 3.5 hours at each site, which is tight. Traffic delays compound — a 30-minute jam at Cu Chi pushes everything back.
Is there a tour operator that combines both in one day?
Very few operate genuine combined tours because the driving time is significant and the timing is difficult to promise. Some operators advertise combined tours but spend minimal time at each site — check reviews specifically for the combined itinerary. The better use of a 'combined' day is Cu Chi in the morning and a Saigon city tour in the afternoon, or Mekong Delta with time to actually be on the water.
