What's the best way to get around Ho Chi Minh City?

Published · 5 min read
Quick Answer

Grab is the practical answer for most trips — reliable, priced in the app, available 24 hours. Metro Line 1 (opened 2024) runs from Bến Thành to Suối Tiên and is useful if your accommodation is near the line. Buses are cheap but slow and stop early. Motorbike rental suits experienced riders; for everyone else, the price difference doesn't justify the risk in Saigon traffic.

Saigon is large — 2,090 square kilometres — but most visitors spend nearly all their time in a relatively compact central zone: Districts 1, 3, Bình Thạnh, and Phú Nhuận. Within that zone, transport is genuinely convenient. The city’s layout rewards being strategic about which tool you use for which situation.

Grab: the default for most trips

The Grab app operates across all 24 districts and handles more than 90% of visitor transport needs. You book in the app, the price is confirmed before you get in, and drivers are rated — which creates accountability that street-hailed taxis lack.

GrabBike (motorbike taxi) is the fastest option for solo trips under 7km in dry weather: it costs 25–45,000 VND and filters through traffic that would stall a car. GrabCar makes more sense in rain, with luggage, or travelling with others. For full pricing, see how much does a Grab ride cost in Saigon?

Metro Line 1

Metro Line 1 opened in late 2024, running 19.7km from Bến Thành Station (District 1) northeast to Suối Tiên terminal in Thủ Đức. It has 14 stations and runs roughly every 10 minutes during peak hours.

Single-journey tickets cost 6,000–20,000 VND depending on distance. A day pass is available for 40,000 VND.

Where it’s useful: reaching the eastern tech corridor (Thủ Đức University area, Vincom Mega Mall), or cutting through traffic toward the Long Biên / Bình Dương direction. For most central district movement, Grab remains faster because the metro doesn’t cover the dense west-central area of Districts 1, 3, and 5.

Xe ôm (motorbike taxi)

Traditional xe ôm drivers — independent motorbike taxis — still operate throughout the city, particularly near markets, bus stations, and outer neighbourhoods where Grab supply is thinner. The rate is negotiable and should be agreed before you get on.

Reference price: 20,000–40,000 VND for short city trips. Longer rides: negotiate, then divide by two and counter-offer. Having the address written in Vietnamese on your phone removes ambiguity about the destination.

Grab has largely replaced xe ôm for airport transfers and cross-district trips, but for short hops near Bến Thành Market or Chợ Lớn, traditional xe ôm drivers are fast.

Buses

City buses run from around 5am to 9–10pm depending on the route. Fares are 5,000–8,000 VND flat — very cheap. The BusMap app shows routes in English and is the most reliable way to navigate the network.

Practical limitations: routes are slow due to traffic, air conditioning is inconsistent, and the network doesn’t cover outer tourist areas well. For budget travelers with time, buses from District 1 to the airport or Chợ Lớn are workable. For most trips, the time cost makes Grab more efficient.

Motorbike rental

Daily rental runs 100,000–200,000 VND. The experience of riding in Saigon is intense even for experienced riders. See is it safe to rent a motorbike in Saigon as a tourist? before deciding.

Walking

District 1’s core — the triangle between Bến Thành Market, Nguyễn Huệ walking street, and the Saigon River — is walkable. Outside that zone, footpaths are inconsistent and the heat is significant. Most visitors walk within blocks, Grab between neighbourhoods.

How much does a typical Grab ride cost in Saigon?
GrabBike (motorbike): 25–45,000 VND for trips under 5km. GrabCar: 45–80,000 VND for the same distance. Cross-district trips like D1 to D7 run 60–130,000 VND depending on service type. Surge pricing during rain or rush hour (7–9am, 5–7pm) can double the base fare.
Is the Saigon metro worth using for tourists?
Metro Line 1 is useful if you're staying in District 1 near Bến Thành Station or heading toward Thủ Đức and the eastern suburbs. The full 19.7km line has 14 stations. For most tourist movement within central districts, Grab is faster and more flexible. The metro is excellent for avoiding traffic to the eastern end of the city.
Are taxis still relevant in Saigon now that Grab exists?
For most visitors, no. Grab is cheaper, price-confirmed before the ride, and easier to hail. Official metered taxis — Vinasun and Mai Linh — remain a reliable backup when you have no mobile data or prefer cash without the app. Avoid unmarked taxis and any vehicle offering a fixed price before you get in.
