Should I do an overnight Mekong Delta trip instead of a day trip from Saigon?
An overnight stay in Cần Thơ is meaningfully better than a Saigon day trip if the Mekong Delta is a priority for you. The Cái Răng floating market at 5–7am is only accessible with an overnight stay. Day trips to Mỹ Tho give a taste of the delta's landscape and canal system but arrive after market activity has wound down. If you have an extra day in your itinerary, Cần Thơ overnight is worth it.
The Mekong Delta question comes down to what you’re trying to see. If it’s landscapes and a sense of the river system, a day trip from Saigon to Mỹ Tho works. If it’s the actual life of the delta — the markets, the fishing boats, the commerce — you need to stay overnight.
Why the floating market question matters
The Cái Răng floating market in Cần Thơ operates between 5am and 8am. Peak wholesale activity — boats trading fruit and vegetables, vendors cooking breakfast on water, the whole photogenic chaos of it — happens between 5:30 and 7am. After 8am, the market winds down to almost nothing.
A Saigon day trip to Cần Thơ takes 3+ hours by road. Leaving at 4am gets you there by 7am — the tail end of market activity. Leaving at the normal tour departure of 7–8am arrives at 10–11am, well after it’s over. Most “Cần Thơ day tour” operators don’t clarify this.
The only way to see Cái Răng properly is to overnight in Cần Thơ and hire a boat at 5am.
The day trip case: Mỹ Tho
A Mỹ Tho + Bến Tre day tour from Saigon is not the same experience, but it has real value:
- You see the delta’s landscape: wide rivers, narrow canals, palm trees, sampan boats
- The Bến Tre canal system is genuinely photogenic
- You get a sense of how people live and move in this landscape
- The coconut candy factory and honey farm are tourist-oriented but not dishonest about it
For travelers with one day to spare, a Mỹ Tho day trip is a reasonable introduction to the delta. For travelers who specifically want the floating market, it’s the wrong destination.
Overnight Cần Thơ in practice
Getting there: Overnight bus from Miền Tây bus station (Phương Trang, Kumho) leaves 8–11pm, arrives 3–4 hours later. Cost 150,000–220,000 VND. Alternatively: afternoon departure, arriving by 5–6pm.
Accommodation: Cần Thơ has solid mid-range options at 400,000–900,000 VND per night, concentrated near the riverfront and the night market area.
The boat: At the Cái Răng pier (accessible by xe ôm from central Cần Thơ, 10–15 minutes), boat owners rent motorized sampans for 150,000–250,000 VND per hour. A 1.5–2 hour trip covers the main market area.
Total cost: Roughly 1,000,000–1,700,000 VND per person all-in — competitive with or cheaper than a premium Saigon day tour, with considerably more to show for it.
