How far in advance should I book a Saigon hotel?

Published · 4 min read
Quick Answer

Outside peak periods, 3–7 days advance booking is fine for most Saigon hotels and hostels. During Tết (January–February), the April 30–May 1 holiday, and Christmas week, book 3–4 weeks out — mid-range and well-reviewed budget properties sell out and prices rise 30–50%. Flexible travelers can often find walk-in rates on Booking.com same-day for standard periods.

Saigon has one of Southeast Asia’s largest hotel inventories relative to its tourist volume. Outside specific peak periods, the city almost never runs short of rooms. This means booking strategy matters less than most travelers worry about — but when it does matter, it matters a lot.

Standard periods (most of the year)

For arrivals outside peak holidays, 3–7 days advance booking is sufficient for most traveler types:

  • Budget hostels: 2–3 days is usually fine. Some top-rated properties with only 10–20 beds do fill up, but alternatives are always nearby.
  • Mid-range hotels 800k–1.5M VND: A week ahead covers most situations. Popular boutique properties on Nguyễn Huệ may warrant 10–14 days during busy months (December, March).
  • Premium 4–5 star: Book when your flights are confirmed. These properties have more inventory but the best-value rooms and high-floor views go first.

Peak periods that require planning

Tết (Vietnamese Lunar New Year): The city changes character during Tết — many locally-run guesthouses close for the holiday, and domestic tourism fills mid-range hotels. Book 3–4 weeks out minimum. If you’re traveling within 2 weeks of the date and haven’t booked, run a search immediately and take what’s available.

April 30 – May 1 (Reunification Day + International Workers’ Day): A guaranteed 4-day weekend for Vietnamese workers. Mid-range hotels in District 1 fill up, and Vũng Tàu and Mũi Né (day trip destinations) become very crowded. Book 3 weeks ahead.

Christmas week (Dec 24–Jan 1): International tourist peak. Higher prices, tighter inventory at the premium end. 3 weeks out is sufficient for most, 4–5 weeks for specific boutique properties.

Same-day and last-minute booking

Booking.com’s app shows same-day availability with often-discounted rates in Saigon during standard periods. Walk-in booking at guesthouses is also possible and sometimes gets a small discount (the owner avoids platform commission). This works in off-peak periods; do not rely on it during the peak windows above.

When is it hardest to find a hotel room in Saigon?
Tết (Vietnamese Lunar New Year, usually late January or early February) is the tightest period — many guesthouses close entirely or are occupied by domestic travelers. The April 30–May 1 holiday (Reunification Day and International Workers' Day) creates a long weekend that fills mid-range hotels fast. Christmas week and New Year's Eve are secondary peaks. Outside these windows, Saigon has enough inventory that last-minute booking is rarely a problem.
Does booking further in advance guarantee a lower price?
Not reliably. Unlike airlines, Saigon hotels don't follow consistent early-bird pricing. The best rates often appear 2–4 weeks before arrival on major platforms. Booking 3 months out sometimes locks in a higher rate than 3 weeks out. The exception is specific high-demand properties — boutique hotels with 20–30 rooms can genuinely sell out, and once sold out, no rate is available.
Should I use Booking.com, Agoda, or Hostelworld for Saigon?
Hostelworld for dorm beds — it has the largest hostel inventory and the most useful per-bed filters. Booking.com for guesthouses and hotels — the review depth is better for smaller properties. Agoda sometimes has lower rates on Vietnamese properties specifically, worth a quick comparison for mid-range options. For premium hotels, the hotel's own website may have the best rate or a small direct-booking benefit.
