Should I use GrabBike or GrabCar in Saigon?
Use GrabBike for solo trips under 7km in dry weather — it's faster in traffic and costs 30–40% less than GrabCar. Use GrabCar when it's raining, when you have checked-luggage-sized bags, or when travelling with another person. For groups of three or more, GrabCar 4-seater is cheaper per person than booking two GrabBikes.
The decision comes down to three variables: weather, luggage, and how many people are travelling. Get those three right and the choice makes itself.
Price comparison
| Route | GrabBike | GrabCar 4-seater |
|---|---|---|
| Within D1 (under 3km) | 25–40k VND | 40–65k VND |
| D1 → District 3 | 35–55k VND | 55–85k VND |
| D1 → Bình Thạnh | 40–60k VND | 60–90k VND |
| D1 → District 7 | 55–80k VND | 80–130k VND |
| Airport → D1 | 80–120k VND | 90–140k VND |
GrabBike is consistently cheaper. The gap narrows slightly on very short trips (under 2km) where the per-kilometre calculation works out more similarly.
When to use GrabBike
- Solo travel, dry weather: Default choice. Faster than GrabCar in Saigon traffic because motorbikes filter between lanes at intersections. You’ll arrive 5–15 minutes faster on a 5km trip during rush hour.
- Short trips under 5km: The price advantage is at its most significant on short distances.
- When you only have a backpack or small bag: GrabBike storage is limited to your lap or the underseat compartment the driver opens for you. A standard daypack is fine; a large wheeled suitcase is not.
When to use GrabCar
- Rain: GrabBike in heavy rain is a cold, wet, and slippery experience. Saigon’s afternoon rains (May–October) are intense — GrabCar surge pricing during rain is unpleasant, but arriving soaked is worse. The price difference between the two also shrinks during rain surge since both are affected.
- Luggage: Anything bigger than a carry-on bag belongs in a car boot, not on a motorbike. GrabCar 7-seater has additional luggage space.
- Two or more people: Two GrabBike fares quickly match or exceed a single GrabCar fare. For groups of three or four, GrabCar is almost always cheaper per person.
- Night safety: After midnight, GrabCar provides more physical protection and the driver is easier to identify through the app. GrabBike is not unsafe at night, but the closed vehicle provides more comfort for travelers who are uncertain.
- Airport arrivals with bags: GrabCar is the standard choice from Tan Son Nhat — both for luggage space and for comfort after a long flight. See getting from Tan Son Nhat Airport to District 1 for pickup zone details.
The rain surge problem
Saigon’s afternoon downpours between May and October are reliable enough to plan around. GrabCar surge during heavy rain can push the D1-to-D3 fare from 65,000 VND to 120,000 VND or more. GrabBike surges too, but less aggressively because demand increases less sharply.
A practical move: check the fare before confirming. If it looks high during rain, either wait 20 minutes for the surge to ease or walk to cover and reconsider. For full pricing context, see how much does a Grab ride cost in Saigon?
