Is Saigon's rainy season a bad time to visit?
Saigon's rainy season (May–November) is not a bad time to visit if you understand how it works. Rain falls in intense afternoon bursts — typically 2–4pm — and clears within an hour. Mornings are usually dry and sunny. Prices for accommodation and tours are 15–25% lower than peak season. September and October are the wettest months, with occasional flooding in low-lying streets.
Saigon’s rainy season runs from May to November, and most visitors who experience it are surprised by one thing: it’s not what they expected. The rain is intense, predictable, and short. It rains almost every day in June through September. It doesn’t rain all day.
How the rain actually works
The pattern is consistent from May through October: clear and humid mornings, clouds building through the afternoon, and then a downpour — usually between 2pm and 4pm — that lasts 30–90 minutes. After the rain, streets clear within a few hours and evenings are often dry.
This pattern is different from the grey persistent drizzle of Northern European winters or the weeks-long monsoon events in some parts of Asia. Saigon’s rain is theatrical but brief. A good waterproof jacket or a small umbrella handles it completely.
Month-by-month variation
May: The beginning of the season — showers start appearing but mornings are reliably clear. Tourist prices begin dropping. This is the transition month.
June–August: Regular afternoon showers. 280–300mm monthly rainfall. Outdoor sightseeing in the morning is largely unaffected. Swimming at Vũng Tàu or Mũi Né is possible on rain-free days.
September–October: The wettest period. Occasional stronger storms, more frequent flooding in low-lying streets. The rain can last longer than usual. This is the toughest month for full-day outdoor plans.
November: Rain drops off significantly (116mm average). By mid-November, Saigon transitions toward dry season conditions. This is an underrated time to visit — lower prices, less rain, comfortable temperatures.
The practical advantages of rainy season
Price: Hotels and guesthouses in District 1 cost 15–25% less than December–February peak. Package tour prices drop similarly.
Crowds: Fewer international tourists means shorter waits at the War Remnants Museum, Reunification Palace, and Cu Chi Tunnels.
Temperature: Counterintuitively, rain cools the city briefly. Temperatures sit at 26–31°C rather than the 32–35°C peaks of the dry season. The rain is welcome relief.
