What should I pack for Saigon?
Pack light, breathable clothing for 28–35°C heat and high humidity. For May–November: add a compact rain jacket or foldable umbrella. Comfortable walking shoes for uneven pavements. One smart-casual outfit for nicer restaurants. Nothing heavy — laundry in Saigon costs 20,000–40,000 VND per kg and returns the same day.
Saigon rewards packing light. The city is hot, laundry is cheap, and you can buy almost anything you forget within ten minutes of your hotel. The following covers what matters.
Clothing
Quantity: 3–4 lightweight outfits for trips up to 7 days. Laundry services near every hostel charge 20,000–40,000 VND per kilogram and return clothes the same day or next morning.
Fabric: Breathable natural or technical fabrics — linen, cotton, or moisture-wicking synthetics. Polyester blends get uncomfortable quickly in 33°C heat and humidity. Avoid dark colours in full sun (they absorb heat); lighter colours work better for daytime.
What to include:
- 3–4 T-shirts or light tops
- 2 lightweight trousers or long shorts (long trousers double as temple-appropriate)
- 1–2 pairs of shorts (not needed if you have long shorts)
- 1 smart-casual outfit (for nicer restaurants — Saigon has genuine fine dining)
- Swimwear if doing a beach day trip to Vũng Tàu
- A light layer (cardigan or thin long-sleeve) for air-conditioned restaurants and museums
Rain gear
Dry season (December–April): Rain is rare enough that you don’t need dedicated rain gear. A compact umbrella is enough if you’re worried.
Rainy season (May–November): A lightweight packable rain jacket is worth having. Alternatively, a compact fold-flat umbrella that fits in a daypack. Saigon sells both at reasonable prices if you forget.
Footwear
Primary: Comfortable walking shoes with grip. District 1 pavements are uneven, sometimes wet, and occasionally have uncovered manholes. Flip-flops work for beach day trips but are not ideal for urban walking.
Secondary: A pair of comfortable sandals for evenings and shorter distances.
Avoid bringing shoes above European size 42 (US men’s 9) if you might need replacement — local sizes are limited.
The essentials list
- Sunscreen: SPF 50 recommended. Available locally but sometimes more expensive than at home. Pack enough for the first few days.
- DEET insect repellent: For rainy season, evening outdoor eating, and day trips to the Mekong or Cu Chi.
- Reusable water bottle: Tap water is not drinkable — bottled water is 10,000–15,000 VND/litre at convenience stores.
- Power bank: For Grab navigation and photography during long days out.
- Padlock: For hostel lockers.
- Photocopies of passport: Keep originals in the hotel safe; carry copies.
What to leave at home
Heavy jackets, formal shoes, excess toiletries (everything is available locally), and anything you’d be devastated to lose to a bag snatch.
