Is there snorkeling or diving in Phu Yen?

Published · 3 min read
Quick Answer

Phu Yen has no professional dive shops or organized snorkeling tours as of 2025/2026. The best underwater experience here is at Hon Yen at low tide — coral and fish are visible through knee-deep water without any gear. Vung Ro Bay boat tours sometimes include basic snorkeling near rocks. For serious diving with certified guides, Nha Trang (2.5 hours south) is the right destination.

The honest answer about diving in Phu Yen: it’s not a dive destination. There are no PADI centers, no regularly operated snorkel tours, and no recognized dive sites as of 2025/2026. The province’s appeal is geological and coastal — what you see above the waterline is more interesting than what’s below it.

What Phu Yen offers underwater

Hon Yen at low tide: The best Phu Yen offers for underwater observation doesn’t require any equipment at all. During the correct tidal window (lunar 1st and 15th, January to June, before 9am), the reef surface at Hon Yen drops below knee-depth. Standing in the water, you can look straight down and see live coral, sea urchins, and small reef fish without a mask. The water clarity in the dry season is good — 1–2 meter visibility through shin-deep water.

Bring polarized sunglasses. They cut the surface glare and make the reef significantly more visible.

Vung Ro Bay boat tours: Some of the small boat operators at Vung Ro Bay offer a basic snorkeling stop near the rocky headlands as part of a bay tour. The coral isn’t exceptional, but the water is clear and the experience is pleasant. If you’re already taking a boat trip there, ask the operator if a snorkel stop is included (150,000–250,000 VND/person for the boat tour).

Nha Trang for serious diving

If diving is a priority, Nha Trang is 2.5 hours south of Tuy Hoa by motorbike or about 2 hours by train. It has:

  • Multiple PADI dive centers operating daily trips
  • Hon Mun marine reserve with protected coral and better visibility
  • Dive sites ranging from beginner-friendly to technical dives
  • Snorkel-only day trips for non-divers

Nha Trang’s diving industry is well-developed. Phu Yen’s isn’t — and that’s fine, because that’s not why most people come here.

Can I snorkel at Ganh Da Dia?
No — the water at Ganh Da Dia is agitated by surf hitting the rock columns and visibility is poor. The formation is photogenic from land but the underwater environment around it is unsuitable for snorkeling. Hon Yen, 20 minutes north, has far better shallow-water visibility during dry season low tides.
What can I see at Hon Yen without diving gear?
During low tide (January to June, early morning), the reef surface at Hon Yen is exposed or just below knee-depth. You can see coral heads, sea urchins, small fish, and various reef invertebrates clearly through the shallow water. No mask or snorkel is needed — just reef shoes for your feet and clear conditions. Bring polarized sunglasses to cut surface glare.
Is the diving better at Nha Trang or Phu Yen?
Nha Trang is significantly better for diving — it has Hon Mun marine protected area, multiple PADI dive centers, established dive sites with coral walls and diverse fish populations, and year-round organized trips. Phu Yen doesn't try to compete on this. The appeal of Phu Yen is its surface landscape, not its underwater one.
