How do I get from Nha Trang to Phu Yen?
Train is the best option: Nha Trang station to Tuy Hoa station, roughly 2 hours, 80,000–160,000 VND depending on class. SE and TN express trains run 4–6 times daily. Bus takes 2.5–3 hours (100,000–150,000 VND) from the northern bus station in Nha Trang. Private car or Grab: 1.5–2 hours, 500,000–800,000 VND for the full vehicle.
Nha Trang and Tuy Hoa sit on the same railway line 130 kilometers apart. The train takes two hours and costs less than a taxi in most cities. It’s the obvious choice.
By train (recommended)
Station: Nha Trang Railway Station → Tuy Hoa Railway Station
Journey time: Approximately 2 hours on express trains (SE series), up to 2.5 hours on slower services
Cost: 80,000–160,000 VND depending on class (hard seat to soft seat). Sleeper berths are available on longer trains but not necessary for this route.
Frequency: 4–6 trains per day in each direction. Check the current schedule — not every train stops at Tuy Hoa. The Vietnam Railways app or website shows which trains stop at each station.
Booking: Via the Vietnam Railways app (12go.asia also covers this route), or at Nha Trang station. Trains on popular dates fill up during national holidays.
The coastal stretch between Nha Trang and Tuy Hoa passes through Deo Ca pass with views of Vung Ro Bay. This section takes about 20 minutes and is worth watching from the window. Sit on the left side (facing north) for the bay view.
By bus
Departure: Ben Xe Phia Bac (Nha Trang northern bus station), on National Route 1A about 3km north of central Nha Trang
Journey time: 2.5–3 hours
Cost: 100,000–150,000 VND
Operators: Phuong Trang (the most reliable), Kumho Samco, and several local companies. Buses run frequently throughout the day.
The bus is slightly slower than the train and the road through Deo Ca pass can be uncomfortable in older vehicles. Phuong Trang buses are generally in good condition.
By private car or Grab
Journey time: 1.5–2 hours
Cost: 500,000–800,000 VND for the full vehicle (not per person)
Grab works in both Nha Trang and Tuy Hoa for intercity trips if you book a GrabCar. Alternatively, negotiate a fixed price with a taxi at Nha Trang station. This is the most flexible option — you can stop at Deo Ca viewpoint or Vung Ro Bay en route without schedule pressure.
By motorbike
130km on Highway 1A, roughly 2 hours. The road is good except for the Deo Ca pass section, which has curves and some narrow spots. Suitable for experienced riders. The scenery around the pass and Vung Ro Bay is the best coastal stretch in the region.
