Can I do a day trip to Phu Yen from Nha Trang?
Feasible but limited. An early train from Nha Trang (around 6am) arrives in Tuy Hoa by 8am, giving you time for Ganh Da Dia and lunch before a late-afternoon train back. You can see one or two sights in a day. You can't combine Ganh Da Dia, Hon Yen, and Mui Dien on the same day trip. One overnight stay is a better use of the travel time.
A Phu Yen day trip from Nha Trang is possible. Whether it’s worth it is a different question.
The logistics
The train between Nha Trang and Tuy Hoa takes about 2 hours. A day trip means:
- 2 hours getting there
- 6–8 hours on the ground
- 2 hours getting back
That’s a full day with 4 hours in transit. The ground time is enough to visit Ganh Da Dia properly (1.5–2 hours including driving and exploration) and one other sight — Dam O Loan or Tuy Hoa city — with meals in between.
A workable day trip plan
6:00am — Catch the early train from Nha Trang that stops at Tuy Hoa. Check the current schedule in advance — not every train stops there.
8:00–8:30am — Arrive Tuy Hoa. Rent a motorbike near the station area (100,000–150,000 VND for the day; bring your license).
9:00–11:30am — Ganh Da Dia. Drive north on Highway 1A (40km, about 50 minutes), spend 1.5 hours at the basalt formation.
12:00–1:00pm — Lunch in the Tuy An area or back in Tuy Hoa (goi ca ngu or seafood near the fishing pier).
2:00–3:30pm — Dam O Loan. Boat out to the floating restaurant platform, eat oysters.
4:30pm — Return motorbike, walk to Tuy Hoa station.
5:00–6:00pm — Catch a late afternoon train back to Nha Trang (arriving around 7pm).
This is achievable. You’ll be moving all day and won’t have time to be slow about it.
What you can’t do in a day
- Combine Ganh Da Dia, Hon Yen, and Mui Dien (too far apart, different directions)
- See Mui Dien sunrise (would require arriving the night before)
- Do Hon Yen at the right tidal time (this requires being at the shore before 7am, which isn’t possible on a day trip from Nha Trang)
- Have a relaxed morning at the market eating bun sua
The case for staying one night
Guesthouses in Tuy Hoa start at 300,000 VND per night. One overnight stay gives you:
- A second full day of ground time
- Mui Dien sunrise (leave at 4:45am — this is the highlight most day-trippers miss)
- A morning at the market
- Time to eat properly at the fishing pier
The transport time each way doesn’t change — but you pay it once instead of twice.
